"The Loop" on Newfound Gap Road was built at a spot where the mountain is so steep that the road had to loop all the way back over itself to make the grade driveable. My Dad found this so amazing that he left my Mom, my sister and me (we were about 8 and 12 years old)on the top while he drove down to the bottom so he could take our picture standing on the top. I don't believe The Loop is as visible now, very grown over with greenery.
